I'm using DVI, and a friend of mine uses DVI, too, so really, it is pure hardware, and the graphics card uses the connection where a monitor is plugged in, whether it be VGA, DVI, or S-VIdeo. You connect the montior via DVI to the PC while it's off, and then turn it on, and you get a screen. That's how it works.
